What Happens During Your First Reiki Session?
If you've been curious about Reiki but aren't quite sure what happens during a session, you're certainly not alone. It's probably one of the questions I'm asked most often.
Many people arrive feeling a little unsure because Reiki is quite different from other treatments like massage or a facial. My aim is simply to create a calm, welcoming space where you can relax, with no expectations about what you should or shouldn't feel.
Before you arrive
Once you've booked your appointment, I'll send you a consultation form to complete at home before you arrive.
When you come to Cedar Rose Wellness in Urmston, we'll spend a few minutes chatting about how you've been feeling and anything you'd like to share. There's no pressure to talk about anything you're not comfortable discussing, but it's helpful for me to understand what has brought you to Reiki.
What happens during Reiki?
You'll remain fully clothed throughout your Reiki session, so it's best to wear something comfortable.
Once you're settled on the treatment couch, I'll explain exactly what will happen before we begin, so you'll always know what to expect.
Unlike massage, Reiki doesn't involve working into the muscles. Instead, I gently place my hands either lightly on or just above different areas of the body, allowing the energy to flow where it's needed. You might notice warmth, tingling or other sensations where my hands are placed, or sometimes somewhere completely different in your body. Everyone experiences Reiki differently, and there isn't a right or wrong way to experience it.
The room is warm, peaceful and designed to help you relax. Soft music plays in the background, and many people simply close their eyes and enjoy the opportunity to rest for a while.
What does Reiki feel like?
This is probably the question I'm asked most often.
The honest answer is that everyone's experience is different.
Some people notice warmth where my hands are positioned. Others describe tingling, or pulling or gentle waves of relaxation or simply feeling very peaceful.
Some people don't notice any particular sensations during the treatment but tell me afterwards that they feel calmer, lighter or as though they've been able to properly switch off for the first time in a long while.
There isn't a right or wrong experience.
My experience as a Reiki practitioner
When I'm giving Reiki, I often notice warmth building in my hands, a gentle tingling sensation in my tongue and sometimes a subtle swaying feeling as I connect.
Occasionally I become aware that someone is carrying a lot emotionally, even before we've spoken about it.
For me, Reiki isn't about trying to make something happen.
It's simply about creating a peaceful space where someone can slow down, rest and receive whatever they need in that moment.
After your treatment
Once your session has finished, I'll leave you to get up in your own time.
Before you leave, we'll have a chat about how you're feeling, and I'll always give you personalised aftercare advice.
Some people leave feeling deeply relaxed, while others describe feeling lighter, calmer or more emotionally balanced.
Everyone's experience is unique, and there's no expectation that you should feel a certain way.

A note from Emma
One of the things I love most about Reiki is that no two sessions are ever the same.
People often ask me what they should expect to feel, but there isn't one single answer. Some people notice warmth, tingling or a deep sense of relaxation. Others simply enjoy having an hour where they can completely switch off.
One thing I do often explain is that Reiki doesn't necessarily stay where my hands are placed. It's quite common for people to notice warmth, tingling or other sensations somewhere completely different in the body. That's something many Reiki practitioners believe can happen as the energy flows to where it's needed most.
You may notice a great deal during your session, or you may simply leave feeling calmer and more settled. Every experience is different, and there isn't a right or wrong way to experience Reiki.
